Oxford Friendly Line - Volunteer Signup

We’re setting up a friendly phone line for people who are feeling lonely and could do with a chat with a friendly volunteer to keep them company.

Other similar initiatives have already been set up and it shows just how amazing our communities are!
Some of these services, allow vulnerable people to register so that volunteers can check up on them on a regular basis.

However, our aim is to have a phone line that is always ready and can take incoming calls whenever people feel lonely.

*** WHO IS THIS SERVICE FOR? ***.
This anti-loneliness friendly line is open to anyone - regardless of age or gender. Anyone who is feeling lonely can pick up the phone, dial our number and a volunteer will be there ready to listen!

*** HOW DOES IT WORK? ***
Our friendly line will be operational 7 days a week from 10am to 4pm.
We have a call handling system that welcomes the caller, reminds them of the numbers to call if they have a medical (or any other) emergency and automatically forwards the call to all "front line" volunteers. The first volunteer to answer will be the one that takes the call forward.
If no front-line volunteer picks up the call within 15-20 seconds, the call is forwarded to all "backup" volunteers.

*** HOW WILL I KNOW THAT AN INCOMING CALL IS FROM THE FRIENDLY LINE? ***
When our call handling system phones you and you answer it, a recorded message will let you know that you're about to be connected with someone that's feeling lonely. This headsup will allow you to take the call appropriately.
In other words, you will know that the call is not coming from one of your friends! :o)

*** WILL MY PHONE NUMBER BE SHARED WITH THE CALLER? ***
No. The call forwarding will happen automatically and the caller will not know your number.

*** WILL THERE BE A COST FOR TAKING THESE CALLS? ***
No. You will only be receiving calls, so it will be totally free to you.

*** HOW MUCH WILL IT COST FOR THE CALLER WHO'S FEELING LONELY? ***
The same as any other local, landline call.

*** WILL I BE ABLE TO REFER PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE CALLERS TO OTHER SUPPORT SERVICES? ***
Of course!
We have prepared a Volunteers Guide that will tell you what to do if you feel that the caller you've just spoken to appears to be particularly vulnerable or at risk of emotional/mental, physical or financial distress.

*** WHAT CAN I TALK ABOUT DURING THESE CALLS? ***
You can talk about anything you like. The weather, dogs, music, movies and anything in between. Chat like you would with an old friend of yours.

*** IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD BE AWARE OF? ***
Beware of scammers. Never share bank or debit/credit card details with anyone. If anyone appears to be in financial need, please refer the caller to the relevant people at Oxford City Council (the number will be on your volunteers guide).
